Simon Carey competes in the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships |

Every year CycleSport Victoria hold the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships, with well over 1200 students taking part. Numerous riders who have competed in the VSCC have gone on to represent Victoria and Australia at major championships and also attract scholarships from the VIS, or gone on to win prestigious races such as the Austral Wheelrace. Such riders who have competed include Australian representatives Mark French, Sean Finning, Tess Downing and Leigh Howard. The Eltham Tri Club was proudly represented by Simon Carey who competed in the East Metro Zone Final at Bayswater on Thursday 28th August. Simon was one of 12 Under 19 years Male competitors in a field of exceptionally talented and experienced riders, many much older than himself. The race was great to watch, with all riders displaying a high level of racing skill and tactics. Simon road a fantastic race, holding his own right to the line where he finished in 6th place. Even though Simon had entered the championships representing his school, CycleSport Victoria and all spectators on the day knew he was a member of the Eltham Triathlon & Open Water Club. Well done to Simon who rode a well controlled race, and no doubt this years tri results will show us that again!

Sunday September 21, Darebin International Sports Centre 2pm About thirty Members and Friends turned out to hear Dave MacKenzie and Sue Sharpels speak about their experiences as elite athletes in world class triathlon and cycling. Sue gave some great advice on assembling sponsorship contributions and generated keen interest from the floor on this point. Dave's description of the life and dedication needed to win a stage of the Giro d'Italia had us enthralled. What a great privilege to have the SBS 2008 Tour de France Co-Commentator all to ourselves for the afternoon! Thanks to Dave and Sue for donating their time to the club. The afternoon was well catered and prepared with lots of extra interest generated by Door prizes and raffle tickets and a copiously stocked buffet and bar. Great value for $20 indeed. Thanks also to Deanne, D'Wayne, Paula, Dan Roberts and Gail Miller for organising such a great event.

 Eltham Triathlon and Open Water Club, with the fantastic support of its members and sponsors will, at the end of May 2008, ship a container of second-hand bikes, tyres & tubes, helmets, running shoes and other equipment to the Solomon Islands to assist with the development of TriSI.
