Supporting the Solomon Islands

Eltham Triathlon and Open Water Club, with the fantastic support of its members and sponsors will, at the end of May 2008, ship a container of second-hand bikes, tyres & tubes, helmets, running shoes and other equipment to the Solomon Islands to assist with the development of TriSI.

The recent troubled history of the Solomon Islands has been well published, as has Australia's Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands to help get the nation running again following years of civil unrest.

One of the initiatives being undertaken to assist Honiara Youth to have a focus during this time of recovery is the development of TriSI, a club with over 50 members and a training schedule the envy of any club in Australia. However in an economy struggling just to supply basic living requirements, equipment for pursuing triathlon is nearly impossible to obtain without support from abroad.

TriSI Predient Ross Andrewartha has asked us if we have any old cycle stuff hiding in the corners of our sheds which we might donate to TriSI. I have an old wheel and a couple of discarded tyres which would go a couple of thousand ks more. If we could get together enough stuff like this then it would be worth sending it to them in a single shipment. So have a look and let me know.

Best Regards,

Andrew Evans - ETOWC President
