Vineman is held in the Sonoma County in the North of California. This is a big region for Wine with many vineyards and spectacular scenery. I had a very interesting week where I travelled on my own to the race so everyone I met was completely new to me, except for Michelle the Kiwi and her mum Gail who I had met three weeks earlier at Texas.

Deanne and I set off for Buffalo Springs 70.3 in Lubbock Texas on Friday morning. We had organised well with our home stay Chuck to pick us up from the airport so we were happy all was going to go well. As we are learning as we go American Airlines are terrible! We have had trouble with them on nearly every flight and this was to be no exception. First our second flight from Dallas to Lubbock was cancelled. Then we were booked for a flight 4 hours later. Then this turned to be about 5.5 hours later! This ment we arrived in Lubbock at about midnight instead of 6.30. Im trying to stay calm and not get worked up and I was doing very well until our bikes didnt make it!

Brett Smythe, Paul Attard, Deanne Orton in Hawaii Hello all, This report is coming from our hotel room in LA. I sit here and look back over the last week and struggle to get my head around everything that has happened. I’ll keep it brief so you can stay awake. Deanne & I spent the 5 days in Kona where all the Ironman stuff takes place. We realised pretty quickly that most people in town love the sport and it is their life. That was pretty cool to see but the downside was that they talk to you like you have never done a race before and come from somewhere where the sun doesn’t shine.

Aloha! Deanne and I have arrived safely in Hawaii. The plane trip was not as painful as expected and so we have had a good start to our trip! Also travelling with us on our plane was Belinda Granger. So very cool to see some other pros heading here at the same time! Our Hotel is about half a mile from the official ironman start which is where we are going to be swimming later today. Most people here love the Ironman and all the locals are very friendly. Yesterday was an easy training day for Deanne and I so we headed out on the “Queen K” (ironman bike and run course) for a 90 minute easy ride. I found the conditions pretty comfortable and came back with the idea that I couldn’t see why people are saying that Hawaii is a hard place! Well, as I found out later, my assessment was guided by this easy ride in cool conditions with small winds and was just bit wide of the mark, but more on that later.
