Sunday saw the running of annual Sandringham Olympic Distance Triathlon. A Supersprint event which, has grown in popularity over the last few years. It now arguably boasts Victoria’s biggest and most competitive fields amongst age group and elite athletes. It is rightly now the Victorian Olympic Distance championship race (even though it has probably been the unofficial one for the last few years) and more importantly race 4 of the Eltham Triathlon club series.

We rose and sparrow’s for the 7am start on a perfect morning for racing. Mid twenties, blue skies and no wind. The atmosphere was great amongst the Eltham team with plenty of club stalwarts many a fresh faces. It was easy to spot the Eltham group with our bright colours and spunky flags! Our supporters stood out also thanks to cheer squad leader Naish Chapman and his Zinc exploits.

20 members raced the Olympic Distance, A couple of groups raced the Olympic team and several in the brooks tri and sprint races.

Highlights of the day included
  • The 600m uphill run from water to T1
  • My pathetic wetsuit removal, which provided comic relief for several spectators
  • Our boisterous cheer squad in their established position of the last few years on turnaround of the run course.
  • Tarryn the seven month pregnant participant. (She swam in a team)
  • Matty Cross’s sunburn. (Post race bathing with a HR monitor not recommended.
  • The 25-29 age group had six Eltham participants 3 of whom made the top ten.
  • Paul Attard’s blistering run (4th quickest of the day.)
  • Cam Simon’s smoking bike time.
  • Ryan Scannell a.k.a superfish, smashed the rest of his age group leaving them in his wake.
Lot’s of PB’s
  • Stephen Hadley 2nd 25-29
  • Cameron Simon 3rd 35-39 (In a super competitive age group)
  • Marra Ferraro 3rd in her age group in brooks.

See you all at the next club race in Sandringham on Feb 21, and thanks to all for a great fun day out!
