WORLD CHAMPS 2009 - Naish's Diary
Written by Naish Chapman

Location: GOLD COAST AUSTRALIA

After surviving the road trip up the Hume, it was time to switch from holiday mode to race mode. Staying in possibly the best hotel I have ever seen with fellow club members Paul, Dee and Steve Hadley was a great way to finalise our preparations for an assault against the world’s best triathletes over the Olympic distance (1500m/40km/10km).

Arriving on the Wednesday, we settled in to the hotel reasonably well. With some light training out of the way early it was off to the official team function that evening. The team dinner was okay and a bit of a rip off but we did get a chance to mingle with fellow Aussie athletes and share a meal with the pros. Cam and Kristen got us amazing seats right down the front of the tables next to the elite team and only metres away from the likes of Brad Kahlefeldt, Emma Moffatt, Courtney Atkinson etc… The tension was high and the atmosphere was electric, with so many fit people everywhere I looked and I began to wonder if the training I had put together over the past 18 months had been enough. The night ended with a return to the hotel and we all attempted to watch a movie. I didn’t see past the opening credits before I was off to dream land in an awkward position on the middle of the lounge floor.

Records tumble at Ironman Oz 2009

The week leading into the race at Port Macquarie was one of the unknown; had I done enough training, was I fit enough, was I going to swim into a dead cow floating down the river from the floods of northern New South Wales. With so many fit looking athletes around town and the millions of dollars of equipment (what economic crisis is the world in?) it was easy to get sucked up by the atmosphere. The sighting of an ironman world champion in a bike shop turned a few in to stalkers.

The 6 ETOWC athletes, Luke & Tarryn Whitmore, Ingrid Trotter, Craig Lewis, Peter Whitmore and Stephan Booth, along with two of Luke Whitmore coached athletes, Mark Bateson & Ruth Bloom had the look of fear, excitement, joy and business on their faces as the carbo party got underway on the Friday night. A few jokes by guest speaker, Ben Darwin (ex Wallabies rugby union player) broke the ice. Especially his version of the marathon, ‘a 42km buffet’.

Race 6 St Kilda - Brooks and Gatorade
Written by Andrew Evans

Eltham Tri had a great day out at Race 6 of the Brooks/Gatorade Series Triathlon event in St Kilda on 22 March.  The weather was ideal for racing; calm in the bay, a light breeze on the cycle course and a beautifully cool early autumn day for the run leg, our race marquee ideally placed to view the final home stretch of the run.  Perfect!!
Nicole Blythe storms to victory
Thirty one members plus partners and family were on hand to watch and support our biggest racing contingent at any single event this season – 22 members stepped off the start and sometime later over the finish line in a fine display of triathletic determination and talent.  Simone Martonhelyi ever resourceful in finding her way into teams joined forces with workmates to lift their teams swim leg. Paula Hogan captured lots of the action with her ever ready camera.  We all hope to see some of those at the end of season dinner, Paula.

Our newest member, Laura Reynolds finished 5th and just 35seconds off the podium having come out of T2 and into the run leg leading the Brooks F18-29 field of 127 with a narrow 2 second lead.  A brilliant debut in triathlon Laura!  Well done.  We look forward to watching how next year unfolds for you.  Laura was accompanied by her sister Amy who also made a great start in her first triathlon.

Congratulations are also in order for 7 Eltham Tri podium finishers on the day (cont...);

Lake Benalla Triathlon 27 Dec
Written by Gail Miller
Thursday, 08 January 2009 11:27

The annual Lake Benalla Triathlon was witness yet again to a dominating Eltham Tri Club contigent on the 27th December. Approximately 15 members took to the field and responded in true festive spirit by taking out the bulk of the podium positions with some truley fine christmas performances.

Strong head winds and river weeds couldn't hold back the athletes, with high temperatures and post christmas pudding causing few problems.

It was an impressive fiield, one which left Luke Bell and other elites chasing our own Paul Attard and Luke Whitmore, and not quite catching them at the finish line.

It was a great weekend with a post event dinner on the river shore, and some easy recovery riding on the Sunday. It was a perfect end to 2008.

Gatorade & Brooks Race 2 08
Written by Cam Simon

The Eltham Triathlon Club has started its worldwide domination of triathlon (or so it seems) with some more great results on the weekend in some of the worst conditions known to man.  When I woke up at 6:00am I didn’t know whether to go to the race or start building an ark!  Once again the rain in the preceding days forced the race to be changed to a duathlon and on race day, rain and wind played havoc with the competitors.  This did not however affect the Eltham Tri members who shone through with some fantastic times, including Paul Attard’s 5th place finish in the Open category and also the 3 fastest age groupers of the day with Cam Simon (me), Luke Whitmore (out for a bit of 'light' post-Hawaiin IM exercise) and Steve Lane.
