Puffing Billy Train Race – Saturday 4th May
Written by Luke Whitmore

The first weekend in May is traditionally when Melbourne triathletes surface from under the blankets at an un-godly hour for the first time in a month. My running shoes where tentatively dusted whilst I pondered the free flowing beer and wine of the past month. In the last four weeks no meal had been served without at least one fried item and a gravy side. “Mmm graaaavvvy!!!” (Homer J Simpson) Eltham Tri was represented well with four members taking part; Cam Simon, Stephen Hadley, Tarryn Gooding and myself. The course is 13.2 km, mostly up-hill and the idea for the men is to beat the first train and the women the second. At the start my body was already suffering Sunday morning bacon and egg withdrawals and I was not looking forward to my heart rate being raised above 100. The gun went off, and we were away. The road in front was a haze and I was reminded of that drink driving ad from a few years ago. The one where the bloke is driving home from the pub and the road gets more hazy as the pots stack up on the dash board. For me it was the opposite, with every kilometer there was less haze and one less pot sitting in the stomach. At the finish line, my only thoughts were (like every year) why the hell did I do this! It was bloody hard and hurt like hell. At the same time however, it was lots of fun and a great way to kick start winter training. I recommend more take part next year. All four of us beat our respective trains and finished in great time (considering the time of year). See you all next year. Luke

On the 16th of Feb. Paul and Deanne flew down south to take part in the Hobart Olympic Distance Triathlon - part of the Australian Series for 07/08.

With one of most technical courses either athlete has competed in they both came out with great results.

Paul wins in HobartPaul was the fastest age grouper of the day finishing in 2:00.26 just shy of his goal of cracking 2 hours. Deanne finished 8th in the 20-24 age group with a time of 2:28.58. Both athletes pleased with the results and the competition out on the course.

If you are looking to compete in an intersate event next year I recommend that this be one for the list. A 2 lap swim in the habour, an 8 lap bike course with some tough hill climbs on each lap and a 4 lap run course it added pleaty of atmosphere.

Bon Beach Open Water Swim

March 16, 2008 - Bon Beach is one of Melbourne’s best kept secrets. Even regular Beach Rd. Riders who pass it on the way to Frankston don’t know where it is. But each year in March it hosts the last of the Herald Sun Swim series and this year a small but highly successful group of our members acquitted themselves well in the calm bay conditions.

Club VP Leanne Sheean secured another first in the F50-59 category and Mike Gowan came in second to renowned long distance and English Channel swimmer Jon van Weiss in the M30-39 category. Well done guys! And congratulations to Leanne on her third place overall in the Herald Sun Series for the 07/08 season.
