28th Feb, 2010 Our affiliated Cycle Club PCC was kind enough to invite our juniors' squad to a day’s track cycle racing. They even added two events to the race program especially for our Triathlon Kids: Ethan, Megan, Josh & Ellis. Everyone had a fun day out with the canteen doing a great job in keeping us supplied and the opportunity for the kids to ride a penny farthing. Thanks to PCC for organising! |

Valentine’s Day was Race 5 of the Gatorade series at Portarlington. Originally I planned to race in Hobart this weekend but this plan changed with TA’s late cancellation of the Tasmanian event. This was quite a disappointment as Hobart is a great venue for triathlon. However my day at Portarlington has substantially helped me recover from this The water temperature in Corio Bay was measured at 21 which meant that we would be racing without wetsuits. It was always going to be a good swim for the guys with the surf skills, as we waded out the first 100m and waded in the last 150m. Normally I would be happy with this but I found that some of the guys, especially the taller fellows could run out much further, leaving me working that little bit harder. Maybe its time for me to do a bit more practice in these conditions. I exited the water about 40 seconds down on the main leaders and more than a minute behind Jamie Rhodes, but he is in a league of his own on the swim. My transition (T1) was not all that flash either. At this point I was not worried about losing contact with the main cycle pack as we had a climb out of transition and I could see most of the guys up ahead. The bike course is one 26km loop with a few undulations but nothing too serious in hill climbing.

Congratulations to all who competed from Eltham Tri & Open Water Club and a very special mention for Paul Attard, over all winner on the day. Picture shows Paul savouring the feel of the Finishing Tape. Our sympathies to Naish who raced on a gashed foot that let him down 5km into the run. Wishing you a swift recovery Naish!
Special mentions also for Cam Simon 2nd M35-39, Ryan Constance who has been moving steadily up the field and finally made the podium on the day with 2nd in M20-24 and Mara Ferraro who continued her series of podium places in the Brooks event F40-49 category with 3rd. |

My Geelong race morning began with the alarm at 4:45am, however the nervous rush that normally comes over me the morning of a goal race was not there. I could only put this down to the fact that I felt well prepared and my body was feeling good.Pre Race - going through transition to set up my station was a blur and quick as the announcements were continuously saying that the race start was only 35 minutes away. On the Start Line - Entering the water with Dee and Dwayne, my goal was to stay with Dwayne as long as possible. The gun went and for what I was about to experience as the roughest swim I have ever done. Keeping Dwayne (The Fish) Hogan in sight there were times when we were almost swimming on top of each other in the middle of a tight bunch. This went on until we hit the first turn buoy and changed direction swimming parallel with the beach. In the heavy commotion of arms and legs, yelling and near drowning, I lost the “Fish” and went on to swim the rest of the course trying to minimize the pummeling going on. |

A beautiful warm to hot day accompanied by strong gusting cross winds causing a number of issues on the bike course through out the days racing. Unfortunately Luke Whitmore was felled by a collision between two Elite riders that occurred right in front of him. Luke’s bike was severely damaged in the crash and his injuries required stitches in his cheek and he sustained numerous cuts and bruises although he was fortunate not to have broken any bones. We are all wishing Luke a swift recovery and return to form.
Steve Booth passing Andrew Evans on the run home. Eltham Tri had a number of Podium finishes for the day … The ever reliable Deb Sumner finished 2nd in the Brooks F50+, Mara Ferraro finished 3rd Brooks F40-49. This was a great effort after her wild evening out the night before. Something to do with a hens party and live male model. Simon Carey was first in his M ITU Junior category and 9th over all on the day. Well done Simon on a great effort! Cameron Simon was first in his M35 - 39 category.. This was another convincing win with 2nd place trailing in 1.5 minutes behind and third place at a distant 2.5minutes. |

Australia Day came gift wrapped in beach weather this year. We had a small but determined contingent on hand to represent Eltham Tri at the Australia Day Swim in Williamstown. Ellis Evans opened the day in the Junior Girls 500m event. Swimming in only her second open water event, she ran 2nd in her Under12 category and was the 4th girl in over all. Congratulations Ellis! Cam Simon was a blistering first place in his category completing the 1km course in 14:23.5. Second place in this category was over 3 minutes (yes minutes!) behind him. Great swim Cam. Talk about stamping your mark! Former Club VP Leanne Sheean is in top form this year. She took out second place in her category 2km swim in 31:29.7, showing wonderful endurance and ability for next week's Big Bay Swim entry.
Also out on the 2km course Darren 32:43.2 came in just ahead of Beanbag 32:57.1 on time, leading Andrew’s 33:48.7. Pity these boys were on different handicaps, altogether it could be an interesting match over this distance! We must try this sometime … L-R: Andrew, Ellis, Darren, Beanbag & Leanne Thanks to Leanne Reynolds and Jane Hinwood for support and encouragement and of course to Williamstown SLSC for staging the event and taking good care of us. We had a great Australia Day in Williamstown. |
