Eltham Dominate the podium again! On Sunday 2nd May, 10 ETOWC members set out to the Dandenong Ranges to run the 13.2km race against the good old fashioned steam train, “Puffing Billy”. The first train set off and with an estimated finish time of 53 minutes and the second train set off with an estimated finish time of 73 minutes, however both trains came in well before there estimated time with the first finishing in 51 minutes meaning only a small portion of the field actually beat it to the finish line. I had never competed in this race before but with Paul & Brett's help my nerves get worse not better by ensuring me that it was not an easy race…Thanks Boys! What a great finish to our main racing season! Perfect weather for triathlon came with the dawn and we were there with our new Race Marquee and almost 50 club members to participate in and support the last of the Brooks/Gatorade Series. Eltham Tri had over 30 race entries our best effort ever and the results were there at the end of the morning. In the Brooks Race 6 Leonie Huber (F18-29 2nd), Mara Ferraro (F40-49 2nd) took podium places and in the Gatorade Race 6 Ryan Constance (M20-24 2nd), Brendan Canty (M15-19 3rd) and Nicole Blythe (F15-19 3rd) all took the podium. Cam Simon won the M35-39 series and is well pleased with his Garmin HR-GPS prize. Michael Sandford stepped up to the plate with his first ever Gatorade entry. Congratulations to all who competed. It was brilliant day's racing. Perhaps a few more minds are turning to the duathlon Winter Series and to building a fitness base for next year.

Here is my last race report for my season! Race 6 of the Gatorade series was held at St Kilda on 21st March, 2001. As this summer unfolded for me, I have actually raced all 6 races of this series. I had not planned to do this at the start of the season but as it turned out this wasn’t too bad of an idea. I went into this race feeling pretty good as I was well rested throughout the week. The Elite field of competitors was in excellent form, as it usually is, and the weather was kind to those of us favored with an early start in the day; not much wind and a calm bay for the swim.
From the gun I just tried to hang in the 750m swim just as long as I could, as I usually do. This turned out to be about the 200m mark for me. From there I found a good rhythm and just held that as long as I could. I exited the water about 50 seconds down on the “superfish” and about 30 to 40s down on the good swimmers. For me this was a good swim result.

This triathlon season is nearing its end and I've just completed my biggest race for this year. I raced the Murray Man triathlon in Murray Bridge S.A. This race consists of a 2k swim in the Murray river a 60k bike leg which is two 30k laps and a run course of 4 laps for a total of 15km. This race has been won by South Australian athlete Matt White for the last two years and he was back again this year to defend his title. From race start my goal was to be up with Matt by the end of the bike. He usually swims quite a bit better than me, so if I were to come out of the water with on his shoulder I would have been off to a good start.

My first season racing as a long course Professional is coming to a close. It has been a time of significant learning and improvements. I finished in the Top 10 at the Busselton Ironman and set PB’s across all distances including a 4.04 Half Ironman and 8:56 Ironman; not all the progress I hoped for but moving in the right direction. After Christmas I worked on ‘race training’, with no intention of peaking for any event. I aimed for a solid two month block of speed work and lots of swimming.

28th Feb, 2010 Our affiliated Cycle Club PCC was kind enough to invite our juniors' squad to a day’s track cycle racing. They even added two events to the race program especially for our Triathlon Kids: Ethan, Megan, Josh & Ellis. Everyone had a fun day out with the canteen doing a great job in keeping us supplied and the opportunity for the kids to ride a penny farthing. Thanks to PCC for organising!

Valentine’s Day was Race 5 of the Gatorade series at Portarlington. Originally I planned to race in Hobart this weekend but this plan changed with TA’s late cancellation of the Tasmanian event. This was quite a disappointment as Hobart is a great venue for triathlon. However my day at Portarlington has substantially helped me recover from this.
