A beautiful warm to hot day accompanied by strong gusting cross winds causing a number of issues on the bike course through out the days racing. Unfortunately Luke Whitmore was felled by a collision between two Elite riders that occurred right in front of him. Luke’s bike was severely damaged in the crash and his injuries required stitches in his cheek and he sustained numerous cuts and bruises although he was fortunate not to have broken any bones. We are all wishing Luke a swift recovery and return to form.
Steve Booth passing Andrew Evans on the run home. Eltham Tri had a number of Podium finishes for the day … The ever reliable Deb Sumner finished 2nd in the Brooks F50+, Mara Ferraro finished 3rd Brooks F40-49. This was a great effort after her wild evening out the night before. Something to do with a hens party and live male model. Simon Carey was first in his M ITU Junior category and 9th over all on the day. Well done Simon on a great effort! Cameron Simon was first in his M35 - 39 category.. This was another convincing win with 2nd place trailing in 1.5 minutes behind and third place at a distant 2.5minutes. |

Hi, It’s been a while since I last reported in but don’t worry I’m still around and doing some racing at the moment. Since my disappointment in the Worlds in September (ed. Paul was involved in a mass cycle crash on a poorly laid out part of the course which ended his race bid there) it has taken me a while to reestablish which direction to take my racing. I got my professional license in October and I really wanted to commit to doing the national series as a short course athlete, as this would mean I had no choice but to work really hard on my swim, my weakest leg. Unfortunately, Triathlon Australia decided in January that they would cancel the whole series. This has left me feeling again unsure of what I have been really training for. Now, as I look at my race calendar, I see there are no short course goal races to aim for! I have spoken to my coach Eric Hanssen and we decided to do as many local races as possible and finish the season with the Murray Man in SA. The format of this race is 2k swim 60k bike and a 15k run. Approximately 50% more than an Olympic Distance event and not the short course event I was hoping for. I am also having trouble at the moment with my plan to join a team in France. I will still head overseas at the end of the season but I don’t think it will be for as long as I had first hoped.

I have only relatively recently made my way to triathlon and I am not going to challenge the greats of our club in competition – especially in cycling!! Knowing that cycling was my real weak leg – I began to work hard up and down the Kinglake hills near home. That has led to a real love for riding in mountains and to my participating in this year's Audax Alpine Classic Extreme. The event is a one day, 250km round trip from Bright in the Victorian alps, over both Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, to name just the two larger hills. The total elevation climbed is apparently some 4,500 metres! The start at 4am was special - even more so when I realised that in my rush to the line I had forgotten the water bottles. Situation rectified the ride to Harrietville presaged the beginning of the real riding. The climb to Mt Hotham – a climb of some 1300 metres occurred as the sun came up. A spectacular sight. The climb itself – with some parts grading over 11% was slow but satisfying! |

Australia Day came gift wrapped in beach weather this year. We had a small but determined contingent on hand to represent Eltham Tri at the Australia Day Swim in Williamstown. Ellis Evans opened the day in the Junior Girls 500m event. Swimming in only her second open water event, she ran 2nd in her Under12 category and was the 4th girl in over all. Congratulations Ellis! Cam Simon was a blistering first place in his category completing the 1km course in 14:23.5. Second place in this category was over 3 minutes (yes minutes!) behind him. Great swim Cam. Talk about stamping your mark! Former Club VP Leanne Sheean is in top form this year. She took out second place in her category 2km swim in 31:29.7, showing wonderful endurance and ability for next week's Big Bay Swim entry.
Also out on the 2km course Darren 32:43.2 came in just ahead of Beanbag 32:57.1 on time, leading Andrew’s 33:48.7. Pity these boys were on different handicaps, altogether it could be an interesting match over this distance! We must try this sometime … L-R: Andrew, Ellis, Darren, Beanbag & Leanne Thanks to Leanne Reynolds and Jane Hinwood for support and encouragement and of course to Williamstown SLSC for staging the event and taking good care of us. We had a great Australia Day in Williamstown. |

On a near perfect day a group of avid members travelled the scenic tour along the great ocean road for the iconic pier to pub 1.2km ocean swim, as held on January 9th. In idyllic conditions and a sea which displayed calmness more like a bath, we eagerly awaited the tense stroll to the pier in readiness for the familiar pre-race frenzy which was to follow. The march down the ramp would be likened to a herd of cattle being bustled for a plunge dip. With a wind assist and a low tide which made for a 100m dash to the finish, one would think the Stawell gift had relocated, and set the scene of the day for records to be broken by most. Highlights of the day included ‘shark bait’ recognition (10 x P2P swims) for associates Lauren Martonhelyi (21.05m) and Joel Seiler (15.56) which is a fantastic achievement by both. Additionally, excellent results were posted by members: Simone (21.05) and Paul (19.27) Martonhelyi, Ken Seiler (16.50), Nick Bohan (18.04), Maiken Sedunary (16.19), Darren Reynolds and Simon Carey who set a blistering time in the open event @ 12.48m in category placing 22. A special thanks to ETOWC support crew and the Lorne SLSC for holding a wonderful event. |
